June: School on Wheels of Massachusetts

School on Wheels of Massachusetts

“The goal of School on Wheels, said Cheryl Opper, founder of the state chapter, is to relieve some of the stress of the most innocent victims of homelessness [in Massachusetts].” – The Boston Globe, February 28, 2010

School on Wheels of Massachusetts is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that is privately funded through individuals, businesses and foundations. It is one of 3 chapters in the United States and was founded in 2004. Their mission is to educate children impacted by homelessness by providing academic support and on-on-one mentoring so children can reach their full potential.

School on Wheels of Massachusetts provides academic support services for children in grades pre-K through college living in shelters and motels. The heartbeat of their program is one-on–one weekly tutoring by trained volunteers. Homelessness is scary, chaotic and unpredictable for children. School on Wheels provides hope and stability for students who have lost their homes by providing school advocacy, tutoring, backpacks, books and school supplies. A quality education can empower a student to break the cycle of homelessness. Supporting School on Wheels and helps them “end homelessness one child at a time!”

This month’s beneficiary

The Winter Quarter theme is FIGHTING HOMELESSNESS. We're proud to give our support this month to the Pine Street Inn which "provides a comprehensive range of services, including permanent supportive housing, job training, emergency shelter and street outreach to over 1,300 homeless men and women each day."
